From The Editor
Welcome to the November 2024 edition of HOONLYUN, the Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance.
We are incredibly grateful for the continued excellent reception of HOONLYUN’s contribution to Taekwondo knowledge. As we enter our 7th year of publication.
In this edition HOONLYUN is proud to present a featured interview with 7th dan Grandmaster Jason Pratt, president of Pratt’s Karate Club since the 2003 passing of his father, Master Leonard Pratt. Grandmaster Pratt has trained with and tested for Grandmaster Richard Chun and Bill “Superfoot” Wallace. He was inducted into the USA Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2014 and promoted to 7th dan by USTA Grandmasters in 2019. We hope you enjoy his insights and reflections.
Also in this issue you will discover in-depth contributions about the evolution of Taekwondo poomsae; how to use your belt to improve your Taekwondo practice; and insights into teaching young children in Taekwondo. A memorial tribute to Grandmaster Richard Chun, who passed away seven years ago this month is presented; as well as a recognition of Grandmaster Kim Soo’s significant influence on Taekwondo.
As usual, we present our USTA Affliliate School News, art feature on Korean Architecture, Student Perspective, and Book Review. But we are saddened to report that our Taste of Korea column is currently suspended due to the retirement of Master Pam Pyke. We hope this is a short hiatus as we search for a replacement columnist. Thank you so much, Master Pyke, for your contributions, including this edition’s article on teaching children, to HOONLYUN over the years!
Please contact us if you would like to submit a contribution for future issues of this valuable publication. We here at HOONLYUN hope to continue providing inspiration to keep you on your training path and to widen your Taekwondo horizons.
Best wishes for your continued health and well-being.
Respectfully,
Mary Sudul, 4th dan

From the Publisher
Welcome to Volume VII/No. 1 of HOONLYUN: The Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance.
In this, our current issue, we once again, pay tribute to Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun, founder of the United States Taekwondo Association—predecessor of the United States Taekwondo Alliance—as we do every year at this time. As a teacher to thousands of black belts worldwide and a true pioneer of the art, he remains an inspiration and the template against which all USTA members rate their achievements in the martial arts. We miss and revere him daily.
Over the decades, whenever a special event was planned, Grandmaster Chun would urge me to invite Jason Pratt from Pratt’s Karate in Texas. Through the USTA, I eventually became acquainted with him, to the point where he traveled to New York headquarters to test and earn his 7th Dan black belt in 2019. Because of his outstanding technical skills, long-time devotion to Chun Kwanjangnim, and his success in maintaining multiple locations, we feature him in this issue.
In addition, we are delighted to present articles authored by USTA masters and authors outside of our organization in an effort to present our readers with differing views and personalities as they relate to Taekwondo. We are honored beyond measure to have contributors Alberto Borjas, Pamela Pyke, and USTA Vice President Tessin Bozard, fill our pages with scholarship and knowledge.
But this publication, released twice a year, is not about any one individual; it is a representation of the academic and technical knowledge offered up by the collective efforts of the global Taekwondo community at large, unhindered by paid commercial advertising, relying instead for its survival through the dollars and support of its readers. If you feel that this beautifully-edited, full-color, hard-copy journal is of value, please alert your colleagues to the existence of HOONLYUN and invite them to visit our web sites at www.hoonlyun.com and www.ustaweb.com where this edition and past issues may be purchased.
Thank you for your ongoing support of HOONLYUN. With your help we look forward to disseminating the multitude of perspectives that define Taekwondo, in tandem with the rich heritage of Korea, for many years to come.
To all our readers, on my behalf and that of my late teacher and founder of the USTA, Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun, stay safe, be well, and train hard.

ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TAEKWONDO ALLIANCE
The United States Taekwondo Alliance was founded in 2023 by Grandmaster Doug Cook, 8th Dan, and a senior student of the late Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun. As successor to the United States Taekwondo Association established in 1980 by Grandmaster Chun, the mission of the United States Taekwondo Alliance is to promote excellence in the traditional and evolving art of Taekwondo. While continuing to promote the legacy of Chun Kwanjangnim, the organization actively inserts its own contributions into the great chain of martial wisdom, focusing on the art of Taekwondo rather than the sport, consciously viewing the discipline as a Way of Life.
With affiliate schools across America, the USTA faithfully maintains traditional technique and Korean martial arts doctrine by hosting educational seminars, online and in-dojang classes, a comprehensive standardized curriculum, certification across a number of levels, cultural and training tours to Korea, and through HOONLYUN: The Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance (www.hoonlyun.com).
