Volume III, Number 1

Grandmaster Doug Cook

& Mary Sudul

From The Editor

Welcome to the November 2023 edition of HOONLYUN, the Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance.

We face many challenges in today’s society regarding our personal safety. Several articles in this edition address different areas of self-protection and protection of others—from an important article on active shooter prevention and response, to the mechanics and safety involved in breaking solid objects, to general safety and health practices to consider applying in the dojang.

Our feature interview in this edition is a discussion with Master Stuart Anslow. Master Anslow is a well known and respected author and publisher in the Taekwondo universe. He has been publishing the on-line Totally TaeKwonDo since 2009 and has authored numerous books on Taekwondo techniques. All in addition to owning and running his own dojang in London.

Also in this edition, you will find a historical examination of the original Seoul YMCA home of the Kwon Beop Bu club founded by Yoon, Byung-In, who influenced the masters who would found the Chang Moo Kwan and Kang Duk-won. We have expanded our USTA Affiliate School News section—enjoy browsing what our affiliate dojangs have been up to! This issue’s recipe feature shares how to prepare the popular Korean Fried Chicken, a classic around the world, and the book review this issue is a commentary on the debut offering of Traditional Taekwondo: The Link Between The Past, Present, and Future by Master Arun Salgunan, a USTA dojang affiliate master.

Please contact us if you would like to submit a contribution for future issues of this valuable publication. We here at HOONLYUN hope to continue providing inspiration to keep you on your training path and to widen your Taekwondo horizons.

Best wishes for your continued health and well-being.

Respectfully,

Mary Sudul, 4th dan

From the Publisher

Welcome to Volume VI/No. 1 of HOONLYUN: The Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance.

It seems like only yesterday that Editor-In-Chief, Master Mary Sudul, and I were discussing the possible longevity of HOONLYUN. That was in 2019 as we were preparing Volume I / No. 2 for publication. Nothing was certain. We both agreed that if we could get beyond a third issue, we would be home free; this in keeping with the concept that if a company can survive in business for three years, it is likely to succeed.

Well, here we are in 2023 shipping Volume VI /No. 1. The magazine has weathered its tenuous first editions, a global pandemic, economic downturns, and continues to watch Taekwondo collide with flavor-of-the-day martial styles. Are we now home free? Not by a long shot. Yes, our last issue highlighting Grandmaster Nam Suk Lee evolved into the most popular to date with several hundred copies being delivered to readers throughout the globe. Is this an accurate measure of victory? To some degree, yes. And, we at HOONLYUN are proud of our accomplishment. But by no means are we out of the woods yet. It is our unending responsibly to provide current, accurate, and interesting articles in order to retain your readership. And we promise to make every effort to do so.

Looking back over past issues, we have had the privilege of spotlighting some of the art’s greatest legends. With this most recent issue, it seems we have come full circle featuring a fellow publisher, author, school owner, and practitioner who is acutely aware of the challenges and joys associated with creating a periodical worthy of its readers consideration. Master Stuart Anslow has been publishing Totally TaeKwonDo—his contribution to the literary world of Taekwondo—monthly since its inception in 2009, never missing an issue. His story, his multiple books, his dedication to his many students, is an inspiration to us all.

But this publication, issued twice a year, is not about any one individual; it is a representation of the academic and technical knowledge offered up by the collective efforts of the global Taekwondo community at large, unhindered by paid commercial advertising, relying instead for its survival through the dollars and dedication of its readers. Articles by James De Carli, Alberto Borjas, Alain Burrese, and our own Pamela Pyke, Michele Radakovits, and Mary Sudul, cover a breadth of topics ranging from the from the scourge of active shooters, safety in the dojang, Taekwondo history, a discussion on breaking (kyuk pa), and tips on creating the culinary delights of Korea, the cradle of Taekwondo. We are sincerely thankful for their editorial contributions.
If you feel that this beautifully-edited, full-color, hard-copy journal is of value, please alert your colleagues to the existence of HOONLYUN and invite them to visit our web sites at www.hoonlyun.com and www.ustaweb.com where this edition and past issues can be purchased.

Thank you for your ongoing support of HOONLYUN. With your help we look forward to disseminating the multitude of perspectives that define Taekwondo, in tandem with the rich heritage of Korea, for many years to come.
To all our readers, USTA members, and fellow practitioners, stay safe, be well, and train hard.

"TO PROMOTE THE

TRADITIONAL AND EVOLVING

ART OF TAEKWONDO"

ABOUT THE UNITED STATES TAEKWONDO ALLIANCE

The United States Taekwondo Alliance was founded in 2023 by Grandmaster Doug Cook, 8th Dan, and a senior student of the late Grandmaster Rhin Moon Richard Chun. As successor to the United States Taekwondo Association established in 1980 by Grandmaster Chun, the mission of the United States Taekwondo Alliance is to promote excellence in the traditional and evolving art of Taekwondo. While continuing to promote the legacy of Chun Kwanjangnim, the organization actively inserts its own contributions into the great chain of martial wisdom, focusing on the art of Taekwondo rather than the sport, consciously viewing the discipline as a Way of Life.

With affiliate schools across America, the USTA faithfully maintains traditional technique and Korean martial arts doctrine by hosting educational seminars, online and in-dojang classes, a comprehensive standardized curriculum, certification across a number of levels, cultural and training tours to Korea, and through HOONLYUN: The Journal of the United States Taekwondo Alliance (www.hoonlyun.com).

Numerous benefits are available to USTA individual members and affiliate schools, including:
